Warming Up-Alternative Energy Source and Global Warming
Global warming is one of the “hottest” issues nowadays. The current climate change is the worst yet to happen. Global warming is an overall increase in world temperature which is attributed to the increasing number of greenhouse gases trapped in the atmosphere. Searching an alternative energy source is considered a way of reducing the toxic emissions.
Greenhouse gases can be produced both by natural and industrial processes. The most abundant greenhouse gases on earth’s atmosphere are water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone and CFCs.
There are several sources of greenhouse gases. Burning of fossil fuels and deforestation lead to higher concentration of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. Without the trees and plants to take in the carbon dioxide emitted by burning fossil fuels, natural gas and petroleum products, all of the CO2 emitted stays in the atmosphere.
Also the use of CFCs or chlorofluorocarbons in refrigeration systems and in fire suppression systems and other manufacturing processes also increase the greenhouse content of our atmosphere. While the use of non-organic fertilizers in agriculture also lead to higher nitrous oxide concentrations, another greenhouse gas.
In the United States, greenhouse gas emissions mainly come from the use of fossil fuels as energy source. Approximately 82 percent of the greenhouse gas emission in the United States in 2006 came from the combustion of coal, natural gas and petroleum (United States Energy Information Administration). Meanwhile in Asia, Chine is expected to increase its emission of greenhouse gas because of the construction of old-fashioned power plants in its internal provinces. Currently, the carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere are the highest in 150,000 years. The 1990s was most likely the warmest decade in history, while 1998 was the warmest year (Greenpeace).
Not controlling the greenhouse gas being emitted by human activity can increase climate change the next hundred years that will be much faster than anything known and recorded in history. There are necessary steps to be undertaken to control the toxic emission that will soon be killing us.
To minimize the consumption of oil, petroleum and other fossil fuel, we should use energy efficiently. Energy that we use should be generated from renewable energy source, which would mean harnessing the natural energy from the sun, winds, crops, tides and waves.
Green energy is another term used to describe sources of energy that are considered to be environmentally friendly, which is also similar to the renewable sources of energy.
There are numerous ways of generating electricity and energy from renewable and natural sources that generate clean and safe energy. Wind, sun, and heat can generate electricity for less price and less carbon emission than those of coal and even gas.
Shifting the world’s attention to alternative fuel source other than relying on fossil fuel is among the solutions in resolving the drastic climate change. Greenpeace cited that with renewable energy and using it smartly, can deliver half of the world’s energy needs by 2050. Greenpeace also cited that it is feasible to reduce carbon dioxide emission to almost 50 percent within the next 43 years.
Governments are taking steps to use and tap alternative energy sources as main source of energy. The European Union leaders made an agreement in March 2007 to ensure that 20 percent of their nation’s energy should come from renewable fuels by 2020. This is part of their effort to cut carbon dioxide emissions and other greenhouse gas. There are even governments offering incentives to their residents who are using green energy.
Alternative energy source may not be the only way to reduce the greenhouse emission that human activity produce. There are simple ways in which we can do to contribute in reducing toxic gas emission and mitigate global warming.
Tackling Global Warming
As we move towards the future, technology is developing rapidly to assist in solving our problems. These problems range from simple issues, such as improving the quality of paper products to the advanced such as improving the quality of life and condition of our planet. Global warming is one of the topics that many of our politicians all decide to sit around and talk about, without showing much progress, which is a cause of great frustration for peoples all over the world.
Too often the politicians involved are too caught up with trying to prove their opponent wrong to actually improve the situation. This causes further problems, and compounds the problem. Each time the topic is revisited it causes heated discussions from members of parties who drive large expensive cars, which consume gallons of gas, and release large quantities of smog into the air. No one wants to lead the way, and why should they? Conservative politics pays their bills.
As the future is expanded into new and brighter horizons, there are developing ways of trying to help prevent the destruction of the planet. These methods range from cleaner and gentler chemicals, to even the ideals of “green” power. Car manufacturers are even getting into the swing of helping improve the planet by producing hybrid vehicles that are easier on the environment, use less gas, oil and other toxic chemicals, and have lower emissions rates. All that’s left is a major Western societal change, and a widespread recognition of the problems we are facing to change this situation.
The government is doing a great job of helping encourage manufacturers, by offering tax breaks and other incentives. This is always wonderful to help reduce the emissions rates for vehicles, and slowly the tax incentives are expanding to allow other companies the same discounts and savings for switching to cleaner more energy efficient methods. Is this a good thing? Should the government really be encouraging this behavior? Many say that yes, it should be encouraged and programs that encourage the use of cleaner power, and less environmentally hazardous chemicals should always be rewarded, especially since the cost of such methods and chemicals tend to be more expensive.
Normal taxpayers are not seeing the benefits of trying to go “green” when looking at their own budgets. Many electrical companies are starting to offer “green blocks” of power which can be purchased, however these blocks are purchased in addition to the normal household power consumption, and do not allow discounts on the next months bill in exchange for the purchase. Something seems a bit odd here, major manufacturers are encouraged with tax breaks and incentives to switch to cleaner methods, but millions of households are not.
It seems, a good step in the direction of correcting global warming, would be to create a program to help reward the small things that households could easily do. That would save thousands, if not millions of watts of power each year. This would reduce immensely the amount of power that is needed to be produced, and allow the power companies to help clean up large areas at a time, instead of just a few manufacturing areas which have fallen into disuse.
While it is a wonderful idea to clean up the smog-ridden towns, and reduce the energy uses, so that resources from the ground are not burned continuously in the pursuit of energy. There are smaller things that can be done on a very large scale that would help reduce the amount of damage that is done to the ozone layer each year, and would greatly slow the damage that the human race is causing to our greatest asset, our planet. It’s not the burden of the government, nor is it the burden of the people. We can all make the change, but it needs the collective of humanity to make the difference our planet so dearly needs.
Saving Energy for Kids- Teaching Your Kids To Be Energy Efficient
Saving energy and saving money should not be your sole responsibility as parents. Your kids must also learn to contribute in keeping the electric bills down. This way, your effort will not get wasted and at the same time, your kids will learn good values while growing up.
Because teaching your kids to be energy efficient requires some effort, here are easy to follow suggestions you can do:
Education
Teaching your kids the importance of saving energy should be your first goal. Take note that making them understand the value of being energy efficient is more effective than enumerating the ways to save energy and leaving it at that. Teach them how conserving energy helps the environment. Tell them stories or read educational books about the importance of energy.
Lead by example
You know very well that kids tend to follow what elders do. Practice what you preach. You may have listed and posted a litany of things-to-do to conserve energy but if you don’t follow them yourself, you cannot expect your kids to follow it too. Do not just tell them to turn the lights off before leaving their room; show them by always turning the lights off every time you leave a room in your house. Education and leading by example are a good combination if you want to make good habits stick.
Make it fun
Find educational materials where your kids will learn the value of conserving energy as well as the ways on how to save it. Computer software, educational websites, books and television shows that educate and entertain kids would really make a difference on how well they will respond. This is especially applicable to kids from 5 to 10 years old.
Get your kids involved
Family activities should not limit to eating, playing and entertainment. Chores can also be a good way to bond with your kids. Manually wash the car, water the plants, clean the table, wash the dishes, clean the house etc. These are some of the things you can do with your kids while conserving energy.
Teach your kids according to their age.
Kids of different ages have different attitude on things around them. If your 5-year son doesn’t know how to turn off the lights before leaving the room, all you need to do is to talk to him well about its importance and showing him that you practice what you teach.
Your 10-year old daughter may require different approach like showing her your electric bill and explaining to her that it will greatly help if she will change her bad habits. You are teaching your 5-year old good habits while you are teaching and emphasizing your 10-year old good habits and responsibility.
Same thing applies to kids of different ages. The point is, make sure that you teach your kids proper ways to conserve energy using an approach suited to their ages.
*Energy saving tips for kids.
1-Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.
2-Always turn the lights off before leaving the room.
3-Turn the computer off after use.
4-Do not hold the refrigerator open.
5-Unplug unnecessary appliance.
6-Use natural light if possible.
Saving energy is not so hard if your kids are involved. And just like any family activities you do, energy conservation should be fun, educational and driven by good motivation.
Save Power, and Save Yourself
Practically everybody knows these days that the world faces a serious shortage of energy resources in the 21st Century. The world is expanding at a rapid pace, and it is well-known that the growing needs of power consumption are much more than our present sources of supply. At the same time, it is also true that the enormous levels of consumption of energy are impacting the environment heavily – greater levels of pollution and waste of energy resources.
Governments all over the world are trying to put in concerted efforts to try and find ways to minimize wastage of energy, and power consumption. It is our duty then, both as conscious citizens of the world, and to ensure our own good, to do something about it, use less energy and keep our environments as pollution-free as possible. All of us learnt about alternate power or energy resources in school.
We know, for instance, that the energy of the sun, or of the wind, can be very useful. But, do we know enough about how to save up power on the daily things we do??? Here’s a quick look at some of the things that we can do.
Keeping those computers switched off – How many times does it happen when we have NEEDLESSLY kept the computer on, EVEN WHEN WE DON’T NEED IT? Always remember to switch off the monitor when you are done. It is the monitor that uses up much more power than the CPU, so don’t keep it on without reason, just because you are too lazy to get up and switch it off.
Light bulbs – Yes you know about Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL). You also know that they save energy as compared to other, ordinary light bulbs. But you always thought they were more expensive….well, now is the time to make the change. Do remember that although CFLs are expensive, since they save power, it means less power bills. That is to say, you are the one who gains, both monetarily and in terms of contributing to a better environment.
TV – take the plug off when you aren’t using it.
Air-Conditioners – Keep it to reasonable temperatures. ACs use up more power when the set temperature is too high, or too low. Also, NEVER use it when you really don’t have to. Same thing goes for the geyser as well – keep the geyser thermostat at the minimum, just enough to heat the water. Please don’t heat for too long or use heavy heat – what is only a simple bath for you is heavy power waste.
Microwaves – Forget the de-frost button. Simple. When you place that meat in the micro to be thawed for 20mins, think of the ENORMOUS WASTE you are making. You could have saved all that power simply by keeping it in the air for a couple of hours. And now think of million others like you, who have the same choice as you do, to be just a little bit more careful, and save up on incredibly large amounts of energy. You gain what you save, so Think about it real hard.
You can thus make a contribution. Find out your own ways of saving as well, and convince the others. For a better world.
Home Energy Generation Systems
Creating Home Energy Generation Systems
When you are tired of paying for your high home energy bill month after month and would like see some changes and feel some savings, then, there is a right thing to do: invest on one or more home energy generation systems.
Home energy generation system is the solution if you want to cut those bills down and utilize alternative energy around you just waiting to be tapped anytime. Home energy generation system provides you with the best way to get the maximum financial freedom on home energy. Sure, you have to invest first but it is all worth every penny. You can spare yourself from the present cost of home energy and the future increases that may occur. And most of all, investing on home energy generation system will definitely help the environment for it only uses harmless and clean source of energy.
Among all types of alternative energy that can be used, wind energy and solar energy are the most common.
Wind energy
Wind is very abundant in many parts of the country, thus, many household can capitalize on the use of wind as a source of home energy. It is also said the future’s main source of energy would be the air. As the cost energy production through fuel and oil grows increasingly high for the last years, the clean, safe and free air would be the better choice of the future.
As a main source of power for your home, it provides the financial freedom on the use of energy sourced from the expensive oil. However, wind speed varies on a daily basis. One day, the wind will blow strong. The next day, wind may not be able to keep your turbine spin. And even on the breeziest places in America, you can never tell when will be the next strong wind blow occurs. This is one disadvantage of using wind power but wind patterns do exist. It is said that summer brings less wind while the winter brings strong gust of wind.
If you are planning to install wind turbines on your home, make sure that the local zoning allows wind turbine. You must also ensure that there is a good source of wind on most days. A wide and open space, at least 1 acre, would be ideal for wind turbines. And, if you are paying more than $150 on monthly electric bill, then it may be a good option for you.
There are 5 main components of wind power.
The rotor is the set of rotating blades designed to capture air. The rotation brings power to the generator.
The turbine or the generation is the one attached on the rotor. It stores energy that the house will use.
The tail is located opposite of the rotor. It tracks the direction of the wind.
The tower raises the turbine, rotor and tail up to the air to receive the most amount of wind possible.
The governor is the mechanism that controls the production of energy. This is like the transformer you can see on electric posts.
Solar power
Houses that are built under the sun will compensate on the free solar energy.
There are 6 main advantages in installing solar panels on your roof.
1. Solar panels are lightweight, safe and most of all, easy to install. These are essential in order to place them above your roof.
2. Roof is also susceptible in UV exposure. The solar panel eliminates this. Your roof will also be protected from weather.
3. Solar panel contributes in keeping your house well insulated. They provide extra covering and enable you to save as much as 30% on heating expenses.
4. Drilling holes in your roof is very risky. The interlocking solar panels eliminate this risk.
5. Solar panel design is perfect on any roof type and size. In other words, you can get the perfect solar panel no matter what the size and shape of your roof is.
6. Solar panels are installed without requiring you to modify your roof. It will adapt instantly.
Solar power will tremendously help you cut down the cost of your electric bill. If you think you are in for this investment and if you think your location is most suited to have this, then the choice is fully yours.
Bio fuels – Are they good?
As the term suggests, bio-fuels are fuels that are formed when biological matter decomposes. The bio-fuels are mostly derived from plants. Bio-fuels exist in all the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas.
Difference between bio-fuels and fossil fuels
Bio-fuels are different from fossil fuels in the following ways:
• Fossil fuels take a million years to build whereas bio-fuels can be made extremely fast, in a matter of days.
• Fossil fuels generate huge amounts of pollution. Bio-fuels are comparatively safer.
• Bio-fuels are renewable sources of energy unlike fossil fuels.
Different types of bio-fuels
Bio-fuels have been categorized into four types: first generation, second generation, third generation, and fourth generation.
The first generation bio-fuels are derived from vegetable fats, starch, and sugar, which are in turn derived from food-crops. The first generation fuels are also derived from animal fats. Biogas, bio-diesel, and vegetable oil are some examples of this type of bio-fuels.
The second generation of bio-fuels is mainly derived from waste biomass, thus making it a more balanced option compared to the first-generation bio-fuels. Different kinds of alcohols and diesel generated from wood fall into the category of second generation bio-fuels.
The third generation comprises of bio-fuels derived from algae. Algae are farmed on large scales for creating these bio-fuels. The algae fuels are extremely environment-friendly as they can easily decompose into the soil without harming it.
The bio-fuels in the fourth generation are derived by a method in which micro-organisms are raised to work with carbon dioxide to generate fuel.
Advantages of bio-fuels
Bio-fuels prove advantageous in the following ways:
• Bio-fuels lessen the burden on gradually-vanishing fossil fuels.
• Bio-fuels are environment-friendly. They help reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere.
• Bio-fuels, especially, bio-diesel prove to be very cost-effective for consumers.
Disadvantages of bio-fuels
Bio-fuels are not bereft of criticism. Though beneficial for the environment, bio-fuels have its disadvantages, paradoxically in the environmental purview. Bio-fuels have received criticism for many reasons, a couple of which are stated below:
• Economists have long debated on the usefulness of first generation bio-fuels when compared to the lack of food they cause. Generating fuel from food crops makes food crops unworthy of human consumption. Some people believe that being a higher priority than fuel, food should not be farmed for making fuels but for human consumption.
• Making bio-fuels require acres of farming land, thus encroaching upon the natural habitat of plants and animals.
